Accessibility for Viola’s Room

Are access stewards available to accompany me inside the experience?

If you have accessibility needs and would feel more comfortable going through Viola’s Room with a member of staff, access stewards are available to book at no extra charge.

After purchasing your Access ticket, please email us at accessibility@theshed.org to arrange your access steward. We might not be able to guarantee an access steward if you send a request less than a week before your visit.

Please note: Access stewards might not be available without advance booking. The purchase of any ticket, including Access tickets, doesn’t guarantee an access steward. Access stewards will not be able to assist with personal care needs.

Is Viola’s Room suitable for me if I use a wheelchair or mobility aid?

Audience members who use a wheelchair or other mobility aid (such as a walker, surgical boot, etc) should book an “Access Ticket” in the Private Experience tab for their time slot.

If you plan to attend with a companion, friends or family, please have those individuals (up to 5) book individual tickets separately for the same time slot.

If you have questions before purchasing a ticket, please email accessibility@theshed.org.

Is Viola’s Room suitable for me if I am blind or have low vision?

An audio-described version of Viola’s Room is available. Please let our staff know upon arrival if you need a device with audio description.

However, for the best experience of Viola’s Room, we recommend that you book an “Access Ticket” in the Private Experience tab, and request an access steward to accompany you during your visit (in addition to or in place of your companion). If you have booked your Access ticket, please contact us at accessibility@theshed.org to book an access steward.

Again, access stewards might not be available without advance booking. The purchase of any ticket, including Access tickets, doesn’t guarantee an access steward. Access stewards will not be able to assist with personal care needs.

Is Viola’s Room suitable for me if I am D/deaf or hard of hearing?

We offer the following listening options. Please let our staff know upon arrival if you would like one of these devices.

  • Hearing aids with direct input. Some hearing aids have a provision for a direct sound feed via a 3.5mm TRS jack. Direct input cables are typically bespoke to different hearing aids, so please bring your cable or adapter with you. If your hearing aids cannot connect through a TRS jack, then there is the possibility to connect via bluetooth, although the mini-jack would be recommended before this to avoid any latency issues.

  • Over-ear headphones. If you normally wear a behind-the-ear hearing aid, we can provide over-ear headphones. In most cases, this is the easiest solution as the hearing aid microphone is encompassed within the headphones and so will pick up the sound without any adjustment to the hearing aid being needed.

  • Volume boosters. If you have a hearing sensitivity in one or both ears, we have volume controls that allow the volume to be adjusted individually in each ear.
